Social Media Photography Assignment

One of the first assignments received in the 7pm section of Journalist’s Toolbox at was to explore the Northeastern campus as well as the city at large, taking photos and publishing them on our Twitter accounts. These three sets of two photos were categorized as such: one post about an attraction on Northeastern’s campus, one post about a historical place in the city of Boston, and one post about some newsworthy event. The results of the assignment are recorded below.

The first set of photos I took for the assignment came rather naturally, since I was spending the afternoon at Faneuil Hall, which is a very historic part of Boston. In addition, I also had the desire to pick up a cannoli from the legendary Mike’s Pastry in Boston’s North End. Mike’s happens to be only a couple hundred feet off of the Boston Freedom Trail, with the closest attraction being the Paul Revere House. Across the street from the house is a tiny park named after Revere’s wife that also contains a few small monuments.

For the current event aspect of the assignment, I figured I would scour the internet for any mention of any events commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Boston. Sure enough, a handful of notable Boston museums were offering free admission on that Monday, including the Museum of Fine Arts only one stop away from Northeastern on the MBTA. I went to the MFA at around 1:30 and was quite impressed with the number of people lined up outside on a chilly day to gain access to the museum. The line was nearly wrapped around the block.

Finally, for my artifact on Northeastern’s campus, I visited a site that I had seen several times and been curious of its origins. Upon conducting some research, I learned that the Cy Young Statue placed between the Cabot Building and Churchill Hall actually lies on the location of the old pitching mound for Huntington Ground, where the Red Sox played their home games before the building of Fenway Park. Cy Young pitched for the Red Sox for 8 years in the early 1900s, and accrued 182 wins for Boston, finally leaving the team at age 41.
